Rustic Canyon Villa: Smith-Kennon Residence. Moore/Turnbull Architecture; Pam Burton, Landscape. A few blocks from Will Rogers Beach, architect Charles Moore created an abstraction of an Umbrian hillside villa, stepping its volumes up the natural grade so that the top opens to light, views and terraces. A portico welcomes guests from a country lane and immediately leads to a two-story entry. From here the expressionist stairway weaves diagonally to the upper levels. Midway are guest and master bedrooms with bath opening to a secluded terrace. Crowning the top floor, an eighteen-foot, light-flooded, nave-like space embraces the living & dining areas with hearth and adjacent decks. Eat-in kitchen, powder rooom, one-car garage, one-car port, laundry and storage rooms. An idyll set amidst sycamores, eucalyptus, oaks and a nearby running stream.
