Landmarked courtyard complex in Hollywood by Craig Ellwood seeks $3.25M

Up for sale for the first time in 15 years is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 801, Craig Ellwood’s Courtyard Apartments.

Located in the heart of Hollywood at 1570 La Baig Avenue, a block or so east of NeueHouse, the complex was commissioned by television producer and host Roy Maypole, and earned the Case Study House designer first prize in the collective housing category at 1954’s São Paulo Art Biennial architecture competition.

Measuring 3,360 square feet in total, the complex was originally configured as four two-bedroom, one-bath units, but at some point, two of the units were merged. In 2010, the larger unit was rented and renovated by then-married architects Linda Taalman and Alan Koch, with the makeover process documented in a series of posts for Dwell.

Per the listing description, each unit in the building has been “meticulously restored.” Features include concrete floors, beamed ceilings, sliding glass walls, private patios, fireplaces, and “up-to-date systems and appliances.” The triplex also comes with eight parking spaces and Mills Act tax benefits.

Last sold in 2004 for $1.199 million, it’s now asking $3.25 million. Mike Deasy and Sara Clephane of Deasy Penner Podley share the listing.
